Federal Patent Court

BPatG

The Federal Patent Court (BPatG) was founded in 1961 and is based in Munich. As a court of ordinary jurisdiction, it rules on disputes in the field of industrial property protection.

German Patent and Trademark Office

DPMA

The German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) was established in 1949 and has been based in Munich ever since. It succeeds the Imperial Patent Office, which was founded in Berlin in 1877. It deals with the registration, publication, granting and administration of industrial property rights.

Federal Court of Justice

FEDERAL COURT OF JUSTICE

The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) was founded in 1950 and has its headquarters in Karlsruhe. As the highest court of ordinary jurisdiction, it also rules on matters of industrial property protection, for example on appeals against decisions of the Federal Patent Court or on appeals in patent nullity proceedings.

European Patent Office

EPO

The European Patent Office (EPO) was opened in 1977 and is based in Munich. Its task is to examine and grant European patents.

Unified Patent Court

UPC

The Unified Patent Court (UPC) is currently being set up and will be based in Paris. It comprises a court of first instance, a court of appeal (in Luxembourg) and a registry.

European Union Intellectual Property Office

EUIPO

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO, formerly OHIM) was founded in 1975 and is based in Alicante. It monitors European trade marks (CTM) and European designs (RCD).

World Intellectual Property Organisation

WIPO

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) was founded in 1967 and has its headquarters in Geneva. Since 1974, WIPO has been a sub-organisation of the United Nations (UN). It administers PCT applications and settles disputes through mediation or arbitration.

ICANN

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers was founded in 1998 and has its headquarters in Los Angeles. It ensures the uniqueness of addresses and names on the Internet.
